What two things does the first man have to know about approaching God?

The first man, Adam, must know first and foremost that he approaches God by faith. Second, there must be a blood sacrifice. Genesis 3 is the place of first mention, where Adam is faced with both imperatives, and Scripture teaches both requirements.

Les explains that one of the best ways to understand certain tenets of Scripture is to go back to the place of first mention. In Genesis chapter 3, for the first time, a man is faced with both imperatives. He has to first and foremost know that he approaches God by faith. Secondly, there has to be a blood sacrifice, and the context says it will be found right there. The passage then moves to Genesis 3:20, where Adam calls his wife Eve, meaning the mother of all living, but the key point in this unit is that faith and blood sacrifice are the two things set before the first man.
