Why was Jesus crucified instead of being stoned?
Jesus was crucified rather than stoned because His death required the shedding of blood for remission. Stoning, the Jews' normal capital punishment, would not have visibly shed blood as the crucifixion did. The cross was the whole purpose, fulfilling the necessity of blood being shed.
Les teaches that there are two imperatives: without faith it is impossible to please God, and without the shedding of blood there can be no remission. He explains that both knock out the good works people, who don't know what faith is and shun the blood. The whole purpose of the cross was that He had to shed His blood; it had to be a death where that was evident. Otherwise, the Jews could have gone ahead and killed Him their normal way of capital punishment by stoning. But that wouldn't have fulfilled the shedding of blood that we have on the crucifixion. So the crucifixion, not stoning, was necessary to meet God's requirement of blood shedding for remission.
