Why was Jeremiah thrown into prison?

Jeremiah was imprisoned because the Jews rejected his prophecies and refused to heed what God was telling them. Rather than listen, they cast him into a dungeon, where the Babylonians later found him. His unpopular message of coming judgment and Israel's deepening sin earned him suffering and the title "weeping prophet."

Les explains that Jeremiah was down in a dungeon because the Jews did not like what he said. Instead of listening to his prophecies or adhering to what God was trying to tell them, they threw him in prison. That is where the Babylonians found him. Les notes this is why Jeremiah is called the weeping prophet: he could see what Israel was heading into as they went deeper into the same kind of sins later seen in Romans 1. The context also connects Israel's idolatry, including worship of the queen of heaven, a female goddess, and the women leading the way.
