What kind of belief actually saves a person?

Saving belief is not mere mental assent or intellectual agreement. It is a genuine, Holy Spirit-driven belief that one’s eternal destiny rests on what Christ did on the cross. The gospel—not works or denomination—is the power of God unto salvation.

Les explains that Paul’s gospel is that Christ died for the sins of the world, and this is hard for people to comprehend. Les clarifies that he is not talking about simply making a mental assent and saying, “yeah, you’re all right.” Rather, what is required is a genuine, Holy Spirit-driven belief that my eternal destiny is based on what He did for me on that cross. The gospel, not our works or denomination or anything we can do, is the power of God unto salvation. Les also notes that salvation is more than a better way to heaven.
