Why is it hard to keep people's attention when teaching Romans?

Teaching Romans is hard because it deals with the nitty-gritty of the present—today, tomorrow, next week—rather than the more exciting subjects of Genesis, Old Testament accounts, or future prophecy. People would rather discuss exciting future things, so Romans does not hold attention as easily as those topics.

Les explains that when you start teaching a book like Romans, it is not as attention-holding as Genesis, some Old Testament things, or prophecy. He says he has no trouble keeping people awake when teaching prophecy or Genesis, but Romans gets into the nitty-gritty of today. Since Paul's epistles teach where we are right now—today, tomorrow, next week, next month—people would rather talk about something exciting out there in the future. He acknowledges that, but urges listeners to bear with him because getting the church back into the fundamentals of Paul is what matters.
