What happened to Paul on the road to Damascus?

On the road to Damascus, the Lord struck Paul, converted him, and brought him to the realization that Jesus was indeed the Christ. This event is recorded in Acts 22 as Paul's first-person account and rehearsed again in Acts 26.

Les explains that before this, Saul was consenting to Stephen's death and was the leader of the terrible persecution to stamp out Jews who had embraced Jesus of Nazareth as their Messiah. Paul later wrote that persecuting the Church of God plagued him throughout the remaining parts of his life. Les points out that Paul's conversion is recorded three times in Acts; in Acts 22 he gives it in the first person, recalling how on the road again to Damascus the Lord had stricken him and converted him, bringing him to the realization that Jesus was indeed the Christ, and he rehearses it again in Acts 26.
