Les Feldick Bible Study

Where did Paul go immediately after his Damascus road conversion?

Immediately after his Damascus road conversion, Paul did not confer with flesh and blood or go up to Jerusalem to the apostles. Instead, he went into Arabia, understood in the context as the Sinai region, rather than checking in with the twelve.

Les explains that Paul, many years later writing to the Gentiles in Galatia, says that immediately after his conversion at Damascus he did not confer with flesh and blood. He did not go back to Jerusalem to check in with the twelve, nor did he ask Peter to fill him in from his three years with the Lord or the forty days after the resurrection. Les says Paul instead went into Arabia, which he locates on the map as Sinai, and from Damascus made his way down to what he believes was Mount Sinai in Arabia. This shows Paul did not have contact with the twelve or Jerusalem leadership before his preaching.

Galatians 1:17

Neither went I up to Jerusalem to them which were apostles before me; but I went into Arabia, and returned again unto Damascus.

More Questions

Where did Paul go after his conversion before his preaching ministry?

Instead of going to Jerusalem, Paul went from Damascus down into Arabia, where Les is sure he went to Mount Sinai.

Why is the phrase 'I returned again to Damascus' important for tracing Paul's route after his conversion?

The phrase 'I returned again to Damascus' is decisive, because without it one could logically infer that Paul went from Damascus to Sinai and then directly to Jerusalem to visit Peter before heading to Tarsus.

Did Paul go straight to Jerusalem to check with the twelve apostles after his conversion?

Galatians does not say that Paul immediately went up to Jerusalem to check his revelation out with the twelve.
