Will there be poverty in the Kingdom?
No, in the Kingdom there will be no poverty; everyone will have everything. The early believers sold their property anticipating that coming Kingdom, expecting no lack of houses or lands once the King established His rule. Therefore, poverty will not exist there.
Les explains that the early believers were so willing to sell their property and turn it into cash and bring it to the apostles’ feet because they knew that as soon as the King would set up the Kingdom, they wouldn’t have to worry about houses and lands. He points out that in the Kingdom there will be no poverty, and everyone would have everything. This was their prospect as they looked down the pipe at the Kingdom just over the horizon. According to the Old Testament program, not long after they would reject the Messiah, then would come the wrath and vexation, and then would come the King. With that in view, they weren’t that worried about keeping their property. They gladly brought it to the apostles’ feet because the more the apostles could preach the Kingdom, the more Jews would be brought in as believers, and the faster it would happen, they’d have the King. Les notes that little did they know it would all come to nothing. This also gives insight into why Paul took up collections for the poor at Jerusalem: they had sold all their property, cashed everything in, and the kitty ran dry, leaving them destitute.
