What made it possible for us to be saved in the first place?

God's grace made it possible for us to be saved in the first place. It is His unmerited favor, not something we deserved. Scripture teaches that we stand before Him blameless because of the grace of God, and that same grace keeps those who are truly His.

Les explains that when asked what part of God made it possible to be saved, the answer is His grace. The person did not deserve it, and the same grace that saves is the grace that keeps those who are His, even though we do not deserve it. Les connects this to Galatians chapter 2, where believers stand before Him blameless because of the grace of God—His unmerited favor. He stresses that grace is not license; it does not tell the believer to go out and do what they please. Instead, when a believer is under the power of the Holy Spirit and tries his best in the light of Scripture to walk pleasing in God's sight, and then fails, God does not kick him out. Les uses the illustration of a parent watching a little one take first faltering steps. The parent is proud and does not get upset and boot the child when he falls; rather, the parent picks him up, gets him on his wobbly feet, and gets him going. That, Les says, is what God does.
