What must a person believe in order to properly be called a Christian?
A person must be saved according to the Gospel of the grace of God—believing that Christ died for our sins, rose from the dead, and ascended. Scripture first called Gentile believers at Antioch Christians, and that designation belongs to those saved under this gospel, not merely to Jewish believers under covenant promises.
Les explains that the Word of God never refers to the Jewish believers centered around Jerusalem as Christians. Acts 11 says the Gentile believers at Antioch were first called Christians. Les refuses to call Jewish believers Christians because they were Jewish believers under the covenant promises, like John the Baptist's followers, those who came under Christ's ministry, and those saved on Pentecost. He says you cannot call a person a Christian who has not been saved according to the Gospel of the grace of God—that Christ died for our sins, rose from the dead, and ascended.
