Why are Christians called members of Christ's body?
Christians are called members of Christ’s body because they have been united with Him and made one with Christ, just as husband and wife become one flesh. The church is His body, and believers are members of His flesh and bones, cleansed and set apart by the Word.
Les explains from Ephesians 5 that Christ loved the church and gave Himself for it, to sanctify and cleanse it by the washing of water by the Word—not baptismal water, but Scripture. The church is the called-out assembly, to be presented glorious, without spot, wrinkle, or blemish, holy and set apart. He teaches that believers are members of His body, of His flesh and bones, because they have been united with Christ like husband and wife are one flesh. Paul writes concerning Christ and the church, the body, showing Gentile believers are made one with Christ.
For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.
