What does it mean that believers are members of Christ's flesh and bones?

Believers are members of Christ's flesh and bones in a spiritual sense, meaning they are totally integrated with Christ Himself. At salvation they are placed in Christ, and He comes to dwell within them, a two-way union. Paul calls this great mystery the relationship between Christ and the church.

Les explains that this truth is impossible for him to comprehend except by faith; it is what the Book says. Scripture states that believers are members of His body, members of His flesh, and members of His bones. In the spiritual realm, believers become totally integrated with Christ Himself. They are in Him, and He is in them—a two-way street. The moment a person is saved, they are placed in Christ, but He also comes and dwells within them. Paul uses the marriage relationship to illustrate this. He calls it a great mystery, one of the secrets God revealed to this Apostle, concerning Christ and the church. Les notes that this kind of relationship was not seen between Israel and God, Abraham and Jehovah, or Moses and Jehovah.

Ephesians 5:30
