What did Peter's audience know from Psalm 110:1 about the Messiah?

From Psalm 110:1, Peter's hearers knew that God had called the Messiah back to heaven. They understood He was ready to yet return and remained still able to give them the Kingdom. Even though they had killed their King, God raised Him, and His ascension did not cancel His promised Kingdom.

Les explains that Peter's audience knew from Psalm 110:1 that God had called the Messiah back to heaven. He was ready to yet return and was still able to give them the Kingdom. Peter had just made the point that although they killed their King and Messiah, they did not thwart God, because God raised Him from the dead. Peter confirmed His death, burial, and resurrection, but in this passage he merely states those facts; he does not ascribe salvation to them. The point is that God raised Him, He is alive, and He remains able to give the Kingdom.

Psalms 110:1

The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.
