Where does the concept of a coming King come from?
This expectation originates in the Abrahamic Covenant, not in anything God promised to Adam, but in what He promised to Abraham. Matthew’s genealogy goes back only to Abraham because it presents Christ as the King who will rule and reign over Israel and the whole world.
Les teaches that the whole concept of a coming King comes out of the Abrahamic Covenant, not out of something God promised to Adam, but out of what He promised to Abraham. Old Testament prophecy looks forward to a King of kings and Lord of lords whose government rests upon His shoulder. He will rule not only Israel but the whole world, and His rule will be perfect, with no sin, no corruption, and no rotten politics. This person Isaiah speaks of is the Prince of Peace, Christ, who is also God the Father. Of His government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David. Matthew’s Gospel opens by tracing the genealogy only back to Abraham, not Adam, because Matthew presents Christ as the King who will rule and reign over Israel and the whole world.
