What did Gideon name the altar he built after defeating the enemy?
After defeating the armies that were about to destroy Israel, Gideon built an altar to the Lord and named it Jehovah Shalom. Shalom means peace, and the name is translated in Hebrew as 'I am your peace.' This is recorded in Judges 6:24.
Les explains that this event is part of a series of Old Testament altars and names that reveal God's character. In Exodus 17, after the Amalekites were defeated when Hur and Aaron held up Moses' arms, Moses built an altar and called it Jehovah Nissi, meaning 'I am your banner.' Earlier, in Exodus 15, God revealed Himself as Jehovah Rapha, 'the LORD that healeth thee.' Then in Judges 6:24, after Gideon had destroyed the enemy in chapter 6, Gideon built an altar unto the Lord and called it Jehovah Shalom. Les points out that Shalom means peace, and translated from the Hebrew it is 'I am your peace,' meeting every need of the nation of Israel.
Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it Jehovahshalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
