What event led Gideon to build an altar named Jehovah Shalom?
After Gideon defeated the enemy armies that were about to destroy Israel, he built an altar to the Lord and named it Jehovah Shalom. In Hebrew Shalom means peace, so the name declares, “I am your peace,” marking God’s peace for Israel after the victory.
Les explains this in Judges 6:24, in the account of Gideon when he had defeated the armies that were about to destroy Israel. After Gideon had destroyed the enemy in chapter 6, he built an altar there unto the Lord and called it Jehovah Shalom. Les notes that Shalom means peace, and translated from the Hebrew it means “I am your peace,” meeting every need of the nation of Israel.
Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it Jehovahshalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
