Why did Jesus perform miracles according to John's Gospel and Les Feldick?
According to John’s Gospel, Jesus performed miracles as signs to manifest His glory and prove who He was. The first sign at Cana showed Israel, lacking joy, that He as Messiah alone could bring true joy. Miracles also proved that Israel needed Him.
Les teaches that the miracle at the wedding feast in Cana was a sign given to the nation of Israel. Israel had no hope, had lost its national joy, and its religion had bogged it down; it was destitute of joy. The Lord showed them that He, as their Messiah, is the only One who can bring true joy to the nation, and when He brings joy, it will not be half-hearted or 75 percent but brimful. Les explains that this sign pointed to Israel’s future, though they kept rejecting it and never attained the fullness of His promises. Verse 11 says this beginning of miracles Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, manifested forth His glory, and His disciples believed on Him. Les summarizes that first and foremost Jesus came to prove who He was, and secondly to prove that Israel needs Him.
