How does the process of faith work between God and us?

Faith works by hearing God's Word, not by works. A person contemplates that Christ died and rose, believes it, and thereby listens to God. Faith is taking God at His Word: God said it, we believe it, and God recognizes that belief; on that basis He moves in and does what needs to be done.

Les teaches that there is no work whatsoever in hearing, and that is how faith comes. We contemplate that Christ died and rose from the dead, recognize that is all we need, and believe it. By believing, we are listening to the Word of God. Faith is taking God at His Word: God said it, we believe it, and God recognizes it. On that basis, He moves in and does everything that needs to be done. Les acknowledges this is simplification and many cannot buy it, but Scripture says it is by faith and not the works of the Law. The Galatians began in the Spirit by faith but were trying to be made perfect, or right with God, by the flesh—that is, the Law, which was fleshly, weak, and beggarly. They received the Spirit not by the works of the Law but by the hearing of faith.
