In the Gospel accounts, what did people have to do to be saved?
According to the gospel accounts, salvation for that time required keeping the commandments and the law. With the appearance of the Messiah, an added responsibility was to believe He was the Christ, the fulfillment of Old Testament covenants, yet it remained based on the Judaic system of law.
Les explains that in the gospel accounts, people were still under the Judaic system of law. They were to keep the commandments and the law, and within that was salvation for that time. When the Messiah appeared, an added responsibility was to believe that He was the Christ, the fulfillment of all those Old Testament covenants. But it was still based on the law. Les contrasts this with Paul's teaching that the law does nothing but condemn and has no power to save anybody. He notes that Biblical salvation is not merely hoping or thinking you will make it; you know. The righteousness of God is now without the law.
