What did Jesus's followers see as their last view of him on the cross?
His followers' last view of Him on the cross was a visage so marred and distorted that He barely looked human. Isaiah 52:14 says His form was more disfigured than any man's, the result of physical abuse and God laying mankind's sin upon Him.
Les explains that this was not only physical abuse but spiritual, because God was laying on Him all the sin of mankind. Coupled with the abuse at the hands of the Romans and the crowd around Him, this was the result. Isaiah 52:14 says, "as many were astonished at thee, his visage was so marred, distorted, more than any man, and his form more marred, more distorted, than the sons of men or anyone had ever experienced before." Les says this was the last picture His followers saw of Him as He hung on the cross—totally disfigured, almost not looking human. He wants us to remember that when Martha later sees Him standing and thinks He is the gardener.
As many were astonied at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men:

Why was Jesus' visage marred more than any man before he went to the cross?
