What does Daniel say about the abomination of desolation in the tribulation temple?
Daniel identifies the abomination of desolation as when this individual stands in the holy place, that is, the tribulation temple. This future temple will be Israel’s third, following Solomon’s temple and the second temple rebuilt by Ezra and later enlarged by Herod. It is still future.
Les explains that Jesus is referring back to Daniel the prophet. Daniel says that when this individual stands in the holy place—the tribulation temple—that is the abomination of desolation. Les points out that Israel has had two temples in the past, and a third is about to come. The first was Solomon’s, about 960 B.C. The second was rebuilt by Ezra after the Babylonian captivity, but it was makeshift and lacked Solomon’s beauty. Herod the Great later remodeled and enlarged it, and that was the temple at Christ’s first coming, the one the disciples were discussing in Matthew 24.
