What does the word 'Christ' mean?

The word 'Christ' means Messiah, or the Anointed. Jesus warned that many would come in His name saying 'I am Christ,' meaning they would claim to be the Messiah. So 'Christ' carries the meaning of the Anointed One, the Messiah.

Les explains that in Matthew 24, Jesus answered the disciples' question about the sign of His coming and the end of the age. He said, 'Take heed that no man deceive you, for many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ.' Les teaches that we always have to remember the other definition or other word for Christ: Messiah, or the Anointed. So Jesus was saying many will come claiming to be the Messiah, and they will deceive many. This follows the context where the Old Testament prophets saw both a coming King and a suffering Savior, yet could not put it all together, and the disciples were still asking about the sign of His coming and the end of the age. Jesus also mentioned wars and rumors of wars, but said that is not yet the end.

Matthew 24:5

For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.
