What was the prospect given to Abraham about a coming King?

The prospect given to Abraham was that out of the nation of Israel would come a King. He would rule Israel, and His rule would also spread to the whole planet through Israel. This promise is tied to the Abrahamic Covenant, where God would later set up government for His people.

Les teaches that the prospect given to Abraham was that out of the nation of Israel would come a King. This King would not merely rule the nation of Israel—though He certainly would—but would also spread that rule to the whole planet, and He would do it through Israel. Les connects this to the Abrahamic Covenant beginning in Genesis chapter 12, where God set His finger on one man and promised to make of him a nation of people, give that nation a geographical area of land, and at some point down the road God Himself would come and set up the government. Les illustrates why government is necessary: a people in a geographical area cannot function without government, or there is anarchy. The nation became viable in Egypt, in slavery, and God told Jacob, “Fear not to go down into Egypt, for there I will make of thee a great nation.” They came out under Moses, later entered the Promised Land under Joshua, were ruled by judges for 400 and some years, then asked for a king. Saul was the first king and was a total flop, and then came David.
