What does Matthew 1:1 show about the connection between the Old and New Testaments?

Matthew 1:1 calls Jesus Christ the Son of David and the Son of Abraham, tying Him directly to Old Testament lineage. It shows the New Testament does not suddenly begin something totally different, and no wall separates the Old and New Testaments, so the Old Testament cannot be cut off.

Les teaches that many people think there is a great big wall between the Old Testament and the New Testament, and some feel the Old Testament can be cut out because it has nothing to do with us. But he says nothing could be further from the truth. Matthew 1:1 immediately tells us that you cannot do that, because it reads, “The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham.” The genealogy stops there; it does not go back before Abraham or Adam. By contrast, Luke chapter 3 traces the genealogy all the way to Adam, who was created of God. Matthew depicts Christ as the King, which is why “the Kingdom of Heaven” is unique to Matthew.
