What does Matthew 1:1 substantiate about God's covenant promises?

Matthew 1:1 substantiates that God could not break His covenant promises with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It presents Jesus Christ as the Son of David, Israel's Messiah and King, the fulfillment of covenant promises made to Abraham. The genealogy stops at Abraham, not Adam, because Israel begins there.

Les teaches that Matthew 1:1 is the book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the Son of David. He points out that this genealogy does not go back to Adam; it goes only from Christ's birth back to Abraham. The reason is that Matthew is presenting Jesus as the King of the nation of Israel, Israel's Messiah, and as the fulfillment of the covenant promises made to Abraham. Thus, the verse substantiates that God could not break His covenant promises with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Les also recalls the Syrophoenician woman's words, "Thou Son of David, the Son of Abraham," showing that the line stops at Abraham. This fits John the Baptist's later announcement that the Kingdom of Heaven was at hand, a heavenly Kingdom that would be on the earth.
