Are Sheol, Hades, and hell the same place?
Yes. The Hebrew term Sheol, the Greek term Hades, and the English term hell all pertain to the same location: the center-most part of the earth, the place Jesus said He would descend to. This is where the rich man in Luke 16 was in torment.
Les explains that down in the center of the earth is the area called Sheol in Hebrew, Hades in Greek, and hell in English. All three terms pertain to this center-most part of the earth where Jesus said He would descend. In Luke 16, the rich man died and in hell, or Sheol, he lifted up his eyes in torment, seeing Abraham and Lazarus afar off. He was not there bodily but only in the realm of the soul and spirit. This one instance is presented for our benefit, not as a routine occurrence.
