What part of redemption do believers already have and what part are they still waiting for?
Believers already possess the redemption of the soul and spirit, which is concluded. They are still waiting for the redemption of the body. This corruptible body will suddenly become incorruptible when believers ascend into the Lord's presence, receive their reward, and later participate in the kingdom.
Les explains that verse 23 says believers have the firstfruits of the Spirit and groan within themselves, waiting for the adoption, that is, the redemption of the body. The redemption of the soul and spirit is already concluded, but the body remains corruptible. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15 that it will suddenly become incorruptible when believers go up into the Lord's presence, receive their reward, and get ready to come back as active participants in the kingdom. Les also notes that believers are already members of the kingdom in heaven, which will one day come to earth.
