Where does the river in Ezekiel 47 come from?

According to Ezekiel 47, the river’s source is under the temple in Jerusalem. From there the waters issue out toward the east country, flow down into the desert, and enter the Dead Sea, where they heal the waters and bring life wherever the river comes.

Les explains that Ezekiel sees the same river described in Zechariah 14, and its source is under the temple in Jerusalem. He notes Ezekiel 47:8 says these waters issue out toward the east country, go down into the desert, and enter the sea—the Dead Sea. When they enter, the Dead Sea’s waters are healed, and everything that lives where the river comes shall live, producing a great multitude of fish.

Ezekiel 47:1

Afterward he brought me again unto the door of the house; and, behold, waters issued out from under the threshold of the house eastward: for the forefront of the house stood toward the east, and the waters came down from under from the right side of the house, at the south side of the altar.

Zechariah 14:8

And it shall be in that day, that living waters shall go out from Jerusalem; half of them toward the former sea, and half of them toward the hinder sea: in summer and in winter shall it be.
