How does believing relate to listening to God's Word?
Believing is inseparable from listening to God's Word, because faith comes by hearing with no work involved. When a person contemplates and believes that Christ died and rose again, that believing is itself listening to the Word of God. Faith means taking God at His Word.
Les teaches that hearing involves no work, and that is how faith comes. A person contemplates the fact that Christ died and rose from the dead, recognizes that this is all needed, and believes it. By believing it, that person is listening to the Word of God. Les summarizes faith as taking God at His Word: God said it, we believe it, and God recognizes it; on that basis He moves in and does everything that needs to be done. This is by faith, not the works of the Law. He also notes that repetition helps these truths soak in, and Scripture repeats that the Spirit is received by the hearing of faith, not by the works of the Law.
