What happens to the dead bodies of the two witnesses in Revelation 11?

Their dead bodies will lie in the street of the great city, spiritually called Sodom and Egypt, where the Lord was crucified—Jerusalem. The beast or Antichrist government will overcome and kill them, and their bodies will be left to rot on the sun-drenched streets because of mortal hatred.

Les explains that the beast from the bottomless pit is not a wild animal but an authority or government—either the Antichrist himself or the revived Roman Empire. That government makes war against the two witnesses, does everything it can to destroy them, and succeeds, overcoming them in spite of their power to resist. They are killed. Their dead bodies lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified. Les identifies that city as Jerusalem. The bodies are left to rot on the sun-drenched streets of Jerusalem because of the world’s mortal hatred for these two men.

Revelation 11:8
