How many antichrists are there according to 1 John?

The apostle John writes that there are many antichrists—those who oppose the Word of God—but only one real Antichrist. He distinguishes the many lesser opponents from the singular man he calls the Antichrist, who shall come. So there are many antichrists, yet one ultimate Antichrist.

Les explains that John, writing in that same light, had no idea of a 2,000-year interval. John says it is the last time, and as you have heard, Antichrist shall come. Les notes this is the clearest term concerning this man as being the Antichrist. John also speaks of many other antichrists, others who will oppose the Word of God and so forth, but there is only one real Antichrist. Les then moves into Revelation chapter 13 for further description in symbolism, where the beast is the same as Daniel's beast, the Roman Empire.

1 John 2:18

Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.
