What did God pour out at the cross because He is sovereign?
At the cross of Calvary, God poured out His mercy upon the whole human race, not just Israel, only because He is sovereign. Rather than destroying humanity as He could have, He withdrew into His sovereignty and extended mercy and sovereign grace to all.
Les teaches that at the cross, Israel demanded Christ's death and Rome pounded the spikes into His hands. God could have cleansed the whole human race from the earth, but instead He withdrew into His sovereignty. As the sovereign God of the universe who could do whatever He wanted, as Christ hung on that cross, God poured out mercy—not just for Israel, but for the whole human race—only because He is sovereign. In any other circumstance, He would have had to destroy the human race, Israel, and us. Even today, God continues to offer salvation to the human race because of His sovereign grace. He is sovereign and in grace, and He poured out His mercy there at the cross of Calvary.
