Les Feldick Bible Study

Why does Les call Genesis 15 from verse 12 to the end Israel's deed?

Genesis 15:12 to the end is called Israel's deed because it records Jehovah descending to man's level and performing the ancient rite of real estate transfer, deeding the whole Middle East to Abraham. That transfer of property, accompanied by prophecy, functions as a title deed for Israel.

Les explains that Genesis 15 comes shortly after God gave Abraham the covenant that out of him would come a nation, a land, and a government, with God as king. Abraham asked in verse 8, "Whereby shall I know that I'll inherit this land?" Les says God literally descended to man's level and went through the very rites of transferring real estate. He tells people to write in the margin of chapter 15 from verse 12 to the end, "Israel's deed." Here Jehovah came down and carried out the rite of real estate transfer as done in antiquities. As He goes through this transfer, deeding the whole Middle East to Abraham, He gives prophecy beginning in verse 13. God said, "Know of a surety," meaning God said it and you can bank on it. Abraham's seed would be a stranger in a land not theirs, Egypt, serve them, be afflicted four hundred years. Les broke that down: the four hundred years is the sojourning, not necessarily the affliction, though the verse sounds that way.
