Why have we been forgiven all our trespasses?

We have been forgiven all our trespasses solely because of what Christ accomplished on our behalf, not because of anything we have done. His death for the sins of the world, burial, and resurrection paid the full price, granting forgiveness for past, present, and future sins.

Les explains that when we come under that forgiveness, we are forgiven everything—past, present, and future. We will never come into the presence of God with sin on our back, so to speak, because it has all been paid for. This is beyond human comprehension; we cannot understand it, but we believe it because that is what the Book teaches. We have been forgiven all our trespasses not because of anything we have done, but all because of what Christ has accomplished on our behalf. That is what makes the Gospel so simple and yet so complex, something we will never fully understand this side of glory. The context is Paul's classic statement in Galatians 2:20 that he is crucified with Christ, which reflects the very function of the Gospel: Christ died for the sins of the world, was buried, and rose from the dead. Even though Paul is crucified by identification with Christ's death, yet he lives, and the life he now lives in the flesh is lived by faith—or, as Les prefers, the faithfulness of the Son of God.
