On what basis are our trespasses forgiven?
Forgiveness rests solely on what Christ accomplished on our behalf, not on anything we have done. Scripture teaches Christ died for the sins of the world, was buried, and rose again; when we come under that forgiveness, all trespasses—past, present, and future—have been paid for.
Les explains that this forgiveness is beyond human comprehension; he cannot understand it but believes it because the Book teaches it. He emphasizes that we are forgiven all trespasses not because of anything we have done, but because of what Christ accomplished on our behalf. This makes the Gospel simple yet complex, something we will never fully understand this side of glory. He notes that under that forgiveness we are forgiven everything—past, present, and future—and will never come into God's presence with sin on our back, because it has all been paid for. He connects this to Galatians 2:20, where Paul says he is crucified with Christ and yet lives by the faithfulness of the Son of God.
