What does the word 'perfect' mean in the Bible?

In Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, the word 'perfect' never denotes sinless perfection. Instead, it consistently refers to spiritual maturity. Whether used by Paul or in Genesis, it always points to a mature walk with God, not flawlessness. This meaning applies throughout the Bible.

Les teaches from Genesis 17:1 that when God tells Abram 'walk before me and be thou perfect,' the word 'perfect' in Scripture does not mean sinless perfection. He emphasizes that whether Paul uses the word or it appears in the Old Testament, it always refers to spiritual maturity, not flawlessness. This is a principle to always remember when interpreting the Bible.

Genesis 17:1

And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.
