What does Hebrews 6:20 teach about Jesus as high priest?
Hebrews 6:20 teaches that Jesus entered as the forerunner for us and was made a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek. His priesthood is therefore permanent and not temporary, patterned after Melchizedek, whom the context identifies as a Gentile priest of the Most High God before Israel existed.
Les teaches that Paul wrote Hebrews, and in Hebrews 6:20 Paul writes that the forerunner, Jesus, has entered for us and is made a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek. Les then moves into Hebrews 7, where Melchizedek is described as king of Salem and priest of the Most High God. Because there was no Israel yet, Melchizedek was a Gentile priest, a representative of the Most High God. He met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, and Abraham gave him a tenth of all. His name means king of righteousness, and Salem means peace, pointing to deity. He is without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, made like the Son of God, and abides a priest continually. Thus Jesus' high priesthood is forever after that order.
Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
