Who was Melchizedek when he met Abram?

Melchizedek was the king of Salem—the village later called Jerusalem—and the priest of the Most High God. He met Abram after Abram returned from defeating Chedorlaomer and the kings with him, bringing forth bread and wine as the priest of the Most High God.

Les teaches that Melchizedek is the tremendous individual who has aroused much discussion, if not controversy. He was king of Salem, and Salem means peace. That little village was later known as Jerusalem. As priest of the Most High God, Melchizedek brought forth bread and wine when he met Abram after Abram's return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer and the kings with him. Les also notes that the bread and wine leap all the way to Paul's writing on the Lord's Supper, showing God had everything in mind. The Hebrew term for the Most High God is El Elyon, the God of the Gentiles, not a separate God.
