How does God see our old Adam after we understand the gospel?
Once the gospel is understood—that Christ died two thousand years ago for people living today—God sees our old Adam as already on the cross. The old Adam is not annihilated or removed, but defeated and put in a place where we can control him.
Les explains that the body of sin, the old Adam, is destroyed in the sense of being defeated, not annihilated. He is not removed but is put in a place where we can now control him. When we begin to understand that Christ died two thousand years ago for you and me living now, God considers our old Adam and sees it as on the cross. Les says this is basic to our salvation. Many believers told him after hearing him teach that they enjoyed an assurance of salvation they never had before. Salvation is not a flippant or casual thing, nor does walking an aisle save anybody. When we know our old self is on the cross, it has been crucified. Les directs us to Galatians chapter 2, where Paul makes it clear.
I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
