How do believers become joint heirs with Christ?

Believers become joint heirs with Christ by salvation, through which they become children of God. Scripture reasons that if we are children of God, we are heirs of God; and if heirs of God, then joint heirs with Christ. This inheritance is obtained in Christ, and leads through suffering to future glory.

Les explains that this status is part and parcel of the salvation experience: believers are now children of God. From that, the text reasons that if we are children of God, we are heirs of God; if heirs of God, we are joint heirs with Christ. He notes that if we suffer, we will one day enjoy all the glory of it, and the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. Then, back in Ephesians chapter 1, in Christ we are joint heirs, and in Him we have obtained an inheritance.

Romans 8:16

The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

Romans 8:17

And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
