What does it mean for believers to be heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ?

Scripture teaches that at salvation, through the Spirit of Adoption, God declares believers full children and heirs. Being heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ means believers are co-equal with Him in inheritance: everything that is Christ’s will one day be theirs.

Les teaches that through the Spirit of Adoption Paul says we have been placed as a complete heir with the Father. The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God. And if children, then heirs; and if heirs of God, then joint heirs with Christ. Les explains that when we became a child of God at the moment of our salvation, the moment we believed, God declared us a full son of the Father and a joint heir with Christ. He says this is beyond comprehension. To illustrate joint heirship, Les points to the law: for a husband and wife to be joint heirs, what is his is hers and vice versa; they are co-equal. That means one day everything that is Christ's will be ours, and everything that is His will be ours. The average believer does not have a hint of this, but the Book says it.

Romans 8:17

And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
