Who did the disciples choose to replace Judas?

The disciples, acting on Peter’s initiative, chose Matthias to fill the vacancy left by Judas, so that twelve thrones would be filled for ruling the twelve tribes of Israel. Scripture records that Matthias was selected as the twelfth man to replace Judas, completing the twelve.

Les explains that Peter was concerned because Judas had abdicated his place, leaving only eleven to fill the promised twelve thrones for ruling the twelve tribes of Israel. Since the King could come at any moment, Peter’s first order of business was to get a replacement for Judas. The disciples therefore chose Matthias, who filled the slot left open by Judas. This illustrates God’s promise of the earthly kingdom to Israel and sets up the transition into Acts.

Acts 1:26

And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
