Why did the Gentile woman stop calling Jesus the Son of David?

She ceased using that title because “Son of David” was a strictly Jewish address tied to Israel’s covenantal hope. As a Gentile, she could not rightly claim it, so she dropped it and simply cried, “Lord, help me,” appealing to Him personally rather than through Jewish covenant language.

Les explains that the woman came again and fell down before Him, saying, “Lord help me.” He notes that she dropped the term “Thou Son of David” because that was strictly a Jewish address. As a Gentile she could not use it legitimately, so she learned something and dropped the Son of David bit. She then just said, “Lord help me.” Jesus answered that it is not meet, or right, to take the children’s bread and cast it to the dogs. The children are Israel, the Jews; the dogs are Gentiles. He could not take what was on Israel’s table and give it to Gentiles because of covenant promises. He was there to fulfill the covenants made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and the prophets dealt with God concerning Israel and their coming Messiah. Gentiles were not to receive Israel’s blessings on that covenant ground, which was only for the offspring of Abraham.
