Was Jesus being disrespectful when He called the Canaanite woman 'woman'?
No. In the Greek, the word rendered 'woman' was a term of respect, not the degrading usage common today. When Jesus addressed the Canaanite woman that way, He was not putting her down but respecting her person, and He commended her with the words, 'woman, great is thy faith.'
Les teaches that the word 'woman' as used here, and as Jesus addressed Mary, was not more or less a degrading term as people might think today. In the Greek it was a term of respect. So when Jesus referred to her as woman, He was not putting her down; He was respecting her person, and He says, 'woman, great is thy faith.' In contrast to the Jew, this Canaanite woman acknowledged Him, while the Jew could not condescend to acknowledge that this Nazarene was the son of David. Les also notes she was one of only two Gentiles Jesus ministered to in His whole earthly ministry, the other being a Roman centurion.
