What does Jeremiah say happens to a people or nation that worship false idol gods?

According to Jeremiah 44, a people, person, or nation that goes into worship of false idol gods comes to want all things and is consumed by sword and famine. The Israelites claimed this came after they quit burning incense and pouring drink offerings to the Queen of heaven, failing to see God’s dealing.

Les explains that Jeremiah 44 lays out distinctly what the results will be if a people, person, or nation go into the worship of false idol gods. In verse 18 the Israelites speak back, saying that since they left off burning incense to the Queen of heaven and pouring out drink offerings to her, they have wanted all things and have been consumed by the sword and famine. They did not recognize that God was dealing with them; instead they blamed their problems on quitting idol worship. Jeremiah then addresses all the people in verse 20, including men and women, about the incense burned in the cities of Judah and streets of Jerusalem by them, their fathers, kings, princes, and the people of the land, showing how far pagan worship had penetrated Israel.
