Why is the fulfillment of the law accomplished in believers?

The fulfillment of the law is accomplished in believers not because they are better at law-keeping than Israel was, but because of their position and the power of the Holy Spirit, who enables them to walk after the Spirit rather than after the flesh or old Adam.

Les explains that the law is fulfilled in believers not by superior law-keeping, since Israel had the law and failed, but because of the believer's position and the power of the Holy Spirit. Old Adam is crucified and, in God's eyes, completely dead and out of the picture, yet in experience he is still present but defeated. He does not have to remain uppermost; if he does, it is because the believer is not fighting the battle. The Holy Spirit came in and empowered the believer's spirit, so the Spirit working in consort with our spirit enables us to live victoriously. Old Adam remains powerful and will come to the fore at times, and this is where the warfare exists. There would be no warfare were it not for the indwelling Holy Spirit; otherwise there would be no battle line, and we would not stand a chance against the forces of old Adam and Satan without the Holy Spirit. Les notes the Greek term Pneuma Hagion, meaning that power from on high.
