Did Adam die physically when he ate the fruit?

No, Adam did not die physically when he ate the fruit; he lived 939 more years. The death was spiritual: the part of him that had fellowship with his Creator died, becoming dormant like a tree in winter or a run-down car battery, awaiting regeneration.

Les teaches that when Adam sinned, God had said, 'The day thou eatest of, thou shalt surely die.' Adam didn't die physically for 939 years, but his spirit—the part with which he had fellowship with his Creator—died. Les explains it became dormant, like a tree in wintertime or a car battery that's been run down: still there but dead until outside energy comes in and regenerates it. At the same time, Adam became a sin nature, the old Adam, with only one bent—rebellion against everything God instructed. Les points out this pattern continues through human history: whatever God says for our good, Satan says the opposite.
