What does the flesh do against the Spirit, and what does the Spirit do against the flesh?
The flesh (old Adam/old nature) declares war against the Spirit and the new nature, while the Spirit (Holy Spirit) wars against the flesh. These two forces are contrary, at total odds, and cannot agree, producing a constant battle in the believer until death or the Rapture.
Les explains that the old nature declares war on the new nature, and the new nature must declare war on the old nature, so there is a constant battle. The battle lines are defined from the moment of salvation until we leave this life by death or the Rapture. The old Adam, the flesh, lusteth or warreth against the Spirit, which implies the new nature, and the Holy Spirit is warring against the flesh, or old Adam. These two forces within every believer are contrary and at total odds; they cannot agree on anything. The new nature has a whole new set of values in compliance with the righteousness, holiness, and laws of God, whereas the old nature, whose god is Satan, the god of this world, is bent in rebellion and unbelief. They are two totally opposite forces that war constantly, so you cannot do the things that you would.
