What does agape love cost you when you seek another person's highest good?

Agape love costs self-sacrifice: it may require selling yourself short to secure the other person’s highest good. It means refusing to use liberty to satisfy fleshly lusts, instead letting God-given agape love govern, always seeking the other’s highest good under every circumstance.

Les explains that agape is a higher term than phileo, which Peter used when he said he was merely fond of Jesus. In practice, agape is seeking the other person’s highest good. Les says this means we will many times sell ourselves short in order to accomplish what is highest for the other. Rather than using liberty as an occasion for the lusts of the flesh, believers are to let God-given agape love rule, the love that always seeks the other’s highest good.
