What should I examine myself for?

Self-examination should focus on whether you have a hunger for the Word of God, enjoy being with God’s people, and enjoy prayer time. It also means asking whether you are depending on something you have done or on solid faith in the Gospel, wherein the Holy Spirit leads and guides.

Les explains that self-examination is tied to evidence of true salvation. He first notes that lost people are not led by the Holy Spirit; they are out on their own under the power of the god of this world. Believers, however, are led by the Spirit of God, and that is one indication of true salvation. When asked how someone can know they are truly saved, Les gives several tests. First, do you have a hunger for the Word of God? If not, he doubts there is true salvation, because when we become a child of God, we hunger after His Word. Second, do you enjoy being with God’s people? If not, something is wrong, and he would re-examine his so-called salvation experience. Third, do you enjoy prayer time and taking your needs to the Lord? If not, he doubts there is any relationship there. He cautions that it is a thing of the heart, and no one can look on the heart, but you can self-examine. He also points to the exhortation to make your calling and election sure—not by working a little harder, but by examining yourself in the light of Scripture: Are you depending on something you have done, or on solid faith in the Gospel wherein the power of God has been exercised? When that happens, the Holy Spirit comes into our life and begins to lead, guide, and direct, so that we do not have to have rules and regulations; the Spirit does that.
